Bandung's tech and creative industry has grown significantly over the past decade. There are more digital agencies, freelancers, and development studios here than ever — which makes finding the right one both easier and harder.
Easier because you have options. Harder because the range in quality is wide.
Here's how to evaluate your choices properly.
Start with Scope Clarity
Before you talk to any agency, be specific about what you need. "We want a new website" is not a brief. "We want a company profile website with a contact form and a project portfolio section, mobile-first, completed within 6 weeks, budget Rp 15 million" is a brief.
Agencies that can work with vague briefs will. The output will be vague too.
What to Look for in an Agency Portfolio
Look beyond aesthetics. Anyone can make a website look nice in a screenshot. Ask:
- Do the projects match your type of work? An agency that builds e-commerce platforms may not be the right fit for a corporate platform or institutional publication.
- Can they talk about the project outcome, not just the visuals? "We built a booking system that reduced manual admin by 80%" is more useful information than "we designed a clean, modern interface."
- Are the case studies recent? A portfolio full of projects from 3+ years ago may not reflect current capabilities.
Key Questions to Ask Before Signing
- Who will actually work on my project — the people I'm talking to, or a team I haven't met?
- How do you handle changes to scope during a project?
- What does the handover process look like? Will we own the code, the files, the domain?
- How do you communicate progress — async updates, weekly calls, a project management tool?
- Have you worked on projects similar to mine? Can you share the client reference?
Red Flags
- No clear portfolio or vague case studies. If they can't show you what they've built, be cautious.
- Very low pricing with broad promises. Rp 2 million for a full custom web application means shortcuts somewhere.
- No contract or unclear deliverables. Everything agreed verbally is a risk.
- Slow to respond during the sales process. Communication speed before the project starts predicts communication during the project.
- Can't explain their technical choices. Good agencies can tell you why they chose a particular stack or approach in plain language.
Local vs Remote Agency
There's no strong reason to require a local agency in Bandung for most digital projects. Communication tools make remote collaboration straightforward.
That said, a Bandung-based agency may better understand local business context, market, and language nuance — which matters for content, UX, and anything facing an Indonesian audience.
At Stelarea, we're based in Bandung and work primarily with Indonesian businesses. We're happy to share how we work and what a project with us looks like before any commitment. Start the conversation here.
